Coast to Coast with grunt and wood kayaks
my latest adventure film
Who's the toughest Coast to Coast athlete?
Is it Steve Gurney, Kieth Murray, John Jacoby, Richard Uscher, George Christisen, George Park, Kathy Lynch, John Howard? Joe Sherriff,.. the list of suitors goes on..
We did a trip to find out. Steve Moffatt and I re-enacted an historic trip from 120 years ago to sample our adventure heritage.
The first Coast to Coast athletes were actually George and James Park. In 1889 they dragged, lugged and paddled heavy wooden RobRoy canoes, food amd camping gear from Jacksons, up the Taramakau River, down the Coast to Sumner beach. 330 kms in 13 days.
Moffatt does it exactly as George would've. No Gore-tex or neoprene for him, just oilskin
wool, and an old woolen blanket.
Gurney uses the latest equipment for comparison of ease, effort and that all important adventure attitude.
What is our adventure heritage?
